April showers bring family fun

After years of working with families, we’ve come to see that the best memories are made when you try something new as family. Now that the weather in Pittsburgh is finally out of the ice age, it’s the perfect time to get outside and explore the city. There’s so much to do in Pittsburgh this April and we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite family-friendly events for kids of all ages!

Get ready to bust a funky move at Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s Let’s Move! Family Dance Party. There will be kid-friendly music, time out to do some hands-on art activities, and plenty of memories of “that one time Dad tried to dance and it was very embarrassing.” There’s also Pay What Makes You Happy pricing.

Saturday, April 22nd, 2017 — 11 am – 2 pm — Kelly Strayhorn Theater — Tickets required

April Showers Bring May Flowers! Don’t get caught in a Pittsburgh downpour without an umbrella. Hatch Art Studio is hosting an April Showers Umbrella DIY grown up + kid craft day. Decorate your own 28” umbrella whichever way you want. This is a great activity to introduce kids to painting without having to clean up at home! Hatch advises you to dress to get messy as non-washable paint will be used.

Saturday, April 23rd, 2017 — 10 – 11:30 am, Hatch Art Studio — Tickets required

The Mother of All Pottery Sales is happening at Union Project. Come for a pottery sale featuring all-local vendors, live demonstrations, and hands-on art activities. Stay for the food trucks! At this free event, you can browse art and shop for pieces from the area’s best ceramic artist. Then, get creative by making clay flowers for the neighborhood public garden and create unique recycled-material magnets that you can take home.

Sunday, April 23, 2017 — 10 am – 5 pm — Union Project

FutureFest is all about seeing into the future through art, demonstrations, performances, science, and hands-on activities (think scavenger hunts and craft stations). This free public festival has the goal of celebrating and promoting Pittsburgh’s vision of an achievable, sustainable future. What better way to introduce (or reinforce!) kids’ sustainable habits than showing them how awesome Pittsburgh will be if they take care of her. Plus, admission to Phipps is 50% off during festival hours.

Saturday, April 29th, 2017 — 10 am – 3:30 pm — Phipps Conservatory

Celebrate Art All Night’s 20th year! Held at the Wilson McGinley building in Lawrenceville, this grassroots art community event is thrown entirely by volunteers and is entirely free to attend. They promote artistic expression and is a great way to encourage children to explore art by contributing work and participating in interactive projects.

This event runs (literally) all night from Saturday, April 29th, 2017, at 4 pm until Sunday, April 30th, 2017, at 2 pm.

Fox Petal Floral is taking over Hatch Art Studio for a pre-Mother’s Day Petals and Paints grown up + kid craft day. Kelly from Fox Petal Floral will show you how to made a simple bouquet of flowers. Then, you’ll paint your bouquet on a medium-sized canvas that’s perfect for gifting. Mom loves handmade art!

Sunday, May 7th, 2017 — 10 – 11:30 am — Hatch Art Studio

Play by the Fire – Pittsburgh Glass Center Photographer

Last September, Pittsburgh Glass Center hosted it’s third annual Play by the Fire event, a night to converge, create, and collaborate for teens only! Partnering with arts organizations from throughout the city, PGC presented a variety or artmaking activities, demonstrations, furnace fired pizzas, s’mores, epic bubbles, and dancing!

Kids aged 13 to 18 had a blast with their friends and even met new ones.

Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh is a program of The Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh. It’s mission is to inspire engagement with Holocaust history and connect it to today. They are committed to educating about the Holocaust, commemorating those who suffered and triumphed, and documenting the stories of survivors, liberators, and protectors.
They contacted us in the Fall when they were mounting an exhibition called Holocaust by Bullets. They had committed to taking more photographs at events where survivors in the community would be present and this luncheon with a book signing and guest speaker was one of those times.

Our Everyday – Pittsburgh Fun Family Photography

Fun family photography in Pittsburgh

In late January, we fired off a newsletter titled “It’s never too cold for family fun.” We poked fun at ourselves for launching a new family photography session called Our Everyday late last year, focusing on family portraits in fun outdoor locations right as winter settled.

“But then our amazing community of friends with kids opened our eyes to all the exciting opportunities for winter family fun in Pittsburgh:

  • Children’s Museum
  • Games N’At
  • Indoor Trampoline Parks
  • Carnegie Museums
  • Science Center
  • Phipps
  • Pittsburgh Glass Center
  • Arsenal Lanes
  • Ice Skating
  • Plus, we learned that the zoo is fun all year round- a revelation for us indeed.”

We even went on to talk about the excitement of scheduling snow photoshoot sessions!

And then things got funny again because, during the month since that newsletter went out, we’ve had what? – Three? – Cold days. As I write this now, the sun is streaming in through my office window, and I can hear birds chirping.

Now, we know Pittsburgh well enough to know that winter isn’t over. But while we navigate back and forth through these seasonal and not so seasonal temperatures, let’s plan some family fun!  The above list still works great for when it’s cold or rainy. But with these sunny February days in the forecast for the week ahead and as we look forward to real Spring, consider also:

Sunny Winter Day Photoshoot Locations in Pittsburgh

  • Blue Slide Playground at Frick Park
  • an ice cream shop like Millie’s or Page Dairy Mart
  • your backyard
  • Highland Park Fountain
  • a family hike
  • a family bike ride
  • the riverwalk downtown
  • your favorite park

Our Everyday is a fun and playful photo session where the kids can be kids. We understand that scheduling family portraits can sometimes be stressful as you work to negotiate the perfect outfit and mood for the day. But we don’t require, nor desire perfect. In this session, we’ll go to the zoo, the park, or an ice cream stand where your family can have fun and pretend we’re not even there. Our Everyday sessions include a beautiful album showcasing the best images of your family’s fun day.
